The Essay Cafe

I’m in the middle of helping high school senior prepare for college. We have already, most of us, gone through the wrangling of finding best-fit colleges for each individual, based on a number of factors. Now, we are trudging through the minutiae of filling out the online application forms– though tedious, it is exciting because of what it represents: preparation for a major life transition.

My favorite part of the whole process, however, is working with the students on their personal statements, or college admissions essays.

At a recent college essay cafe (I offer up a myriad of coffees, teas and gourmet snacks to get the students in the mood for writing), I had the students leave their computers and get back to basics: pen and paper. After a lesson in developing an authentic sense of voice in their essays, they put those pens to paper and wrote.
You could have heard a stick pin drop– on carpet.

High school seniors work on their college admissions essays, creating voice and specific details that appeal to the senses.
